Client: [Company] Intranet

This project was done for Malenke Barnhart. The client is a full service engineering, consulting and construction management company. They needed a new intranet that would serve their diverse and geographically dispersed workforce. The challenge was to build a site that would easily serve the needs of their thousands of employees across many different divisions and enterprises. Research suggested that there were a few "must-do" pieces of functionality that the site would need to accomplish. The first goal was to build a site map that would reflect the necessary functionality and over all structure. My role was sitemapping and creation of wireframes.

Once the site map was completed and we had client sign-off, we proceeded with wireframes, beginning with a template and then moving on to the home page. The home page utilizes widgets on the right rail to provide at-a-glance access to several key features such as expense reports, travel and timesheet tracking. In addition to the widgets, the tool bar at the top of the page aids users by putting commonly used functionality front and center.

Because the site has so many pages, a "mega" drop down menu seemed like a good option to keep the design clean and organized. The drop down uses AJAX type functionality to drop on mouse-over and then retract on roll-off after a short pause.

The divisions page is a landing page. From here, users can navigate to the pages and sub pages for each respective division. The three areas below the copy hold the high-level categories for the subordinate pages. One area of innovation is the "view map" link. Because the organization is so large and diverse, it made sense to add a visual representation of the company. Something akin to an org chart, but a little more interesting.

This visualization provides users with an easy way to see all the areas of the company in one graphic. Many times, new employees are lost in the maze of the departments, divisions and business units. This graphic can serve as an easy visual reference to help employees orient themselves. The size of the cirles and relative shading shows their hierarchy.

Tools & Resources is visibloe only in the logged in state. The tools available vary depending on the users permissions.
